9-year Old Pitcher Banned From League Beacuse “He’s Too Good”

jericho9-year old Jericho Scott throws a 40 mph right-handed fastball. In most cases, this would make him an attractive recruit for any little league baseball team. In New Haven, it made him a liability. He throws so hard for a boy his age, when Jericho took the mound last week, the opposing team forfeited the game, packed its gear and left. Since then, the Youth Baseball League of New Haven (a 3-year old league with 8 teams and over 100 players) has disbanded Jericho’s team and told him that he could not pitch any more. Jericho’s teammates have been redistributed to other teams, disgruntled parents have been reimbursed their $50 sign-up fees and Jericho’s coach, Wilfred Vidro, has resigned from the league.

In an interview with the Associated Press, League attorney Peter Noble said the only reason Jericho was banned from the mound was because his pitches were too fast. “He is a very skilled player, a very hard thrower,” Noble said. “… (but) this is not a high-powered league. This is a developmental league whose main purpose is to promote the sport.” Jericho’s understandably furious mother has vowed to shut the league down until her son sees justice. She called the police after venting her frustrations during the August 16th forfeit. “I have never seen behavior of a parent like the behavior Jericho’s mother exhibited Wednesday night,” Noble said. Local attorney John Williams is planning to meet with Jericho’s parents Monday to discuss legal options.

Since when does the neighborhood star athlete get banned from the league? Don’t they give out awards for this level of play? Could race be a factor? What are your thoughts?

    Is race a problem? Nope!
    Races in New Haven:

    * Black (37.4%)
    * White Non-Hispanic (35.6%)
    * Hispanic (21.4%)
    * Other race (10.9%)
    * Two or more races (3.9%)
    * Chinese (1.4%)
    * American Indian (1.2%)
    * Other Asian (0.8%)
    * Asian Indian (0.7%)
    So this would seem a state where minority rules.
    To me they have just given her son the most amazing chance ever. By not wanting him to play due to his amazing abilities they have given him the best PR ever. So tell her to post to websites, send this info to the newspapers, send it to CBS NBC or any news network. Think outside the box.

    I’d probably have to agree with you. We don’t know the demographics of the league- and given the population of New Haven that you’ve laid out, it’s clear that he’s probably not the only brother in the league. However-that doesn’t mean a white player would have treated the same way under the same circumstances. The headlines would probably read: “New Haven league produces prodigy pitcher” instead of “New Haven league bans 9-year old from play”

    However, I agree that this is the type of media frenzy any young athlete would die for. I saw him on ESPN the other day
