Catch, Catch a Fire.. Before it Burns out

catch-poster.jpgA few months ago, I brought up Two New Black Films that were coming out. One of them was Catch A Fire, which hit theaters this weekend (the other was The Last King of Scotland). Ladies and Gentlemen, we all need to go see this movie. Not only was the film full of beautiful black people offering a rare, refreshing glimpse of the lives and communities of our African brothers and sisters; the film also challenges apartheid, notions of terrorism and racism, and is a triumphant story of rebellion, struggle, death and revolution. And, (surprise, surprise) it’s not getting the best reviews from the critics. And let me put my conspiracy theorist hat on for one second.. why was this film released on Halloween weekend!? Who wants to go see Catch a Fire, between Halloween parties, Saw3 and Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Am I looking to deep into this, to suggest that someone might be trying to sabotage this film which, as i said, offers some harsh critiques on our notions of “terrorism” (similar to V for Vendetta, but much better in my opinion). Catch A Fire opened this weekend with a dismal 2 million in the box office, (compared to the near 40 million for Saw 3). I’ve barely seen any advertisement for it, and (get this) when I asked for Catch a Fire tickets, I was handed Texas Chainsaw Massacre tickets. At the time, I was running late, so I just took the tickets and went into Catch a Fire theatre. But when I got home and realized that my tickets were credited towards a film that I didn’t even want to see, to the detriment of a highly controversial Black revolutionary film, I couldn’t help but question the idea that someone might be trying to snuff this fire before it catches.
