Girrrl, We Need to Become Republicans!

Interesting commercial I heard on the way into work this morning, and I only wish I could provide the details on how to hear it, but I will do my best to summarize for your review and comment.

The scene is two African-American women discussing how much the republican party has done for our folks throughout the years. Of course they commented on the usual, “freed the slaves,” rhetoric, but they also gave commentary on the following.

1. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a republican.

2. Democrats helped establish the Ku Klux Klan.

3. Republicans founded the NAACP.

4. Democrats support abortion.

At the end, one of the sisters comments, “We need to support candidates who share our ideals and our moral values. Democrats talk the talk, but the republican party walks the walk.”

As someone who tries to stay up on politics, I’m pretty sure that the information they gave was partially true, but skewed to fit their message. But is this type of advertising potentially damaging to the political landscape?

It’s clear that there is a shift in political ideology, as minorities voting outside of the norm of democrat are steadily rising. There are many factors that contribute to this shift, such as moral and economic policies that appeal to the minority demographic. Considering that the republican party is still associated with domestic failures such as Katrina, 9/11 and the ensuing war on terrorism, is there a genuine basis for this shift? And if there is, is it in our best interest?
