2 new Black films.. i’m excited!
So last night, I went to see Idlewild (I will leave a review/commentary of this film to our resident Blackademic filmmakers, MK Asante, Jr. and Neil Williams) and I peeped previews for two new Black films. The Last King of Scotland, a film about the violent
and eccentric Ugandan dictator, Idi Amin (and don’t get it twisted, the title of the film is not in the vein of The Last Samurai-starring Tom Cruise, The Mexican-starring Brad Pitt or Paul Moony’s: The Last Ni**a on Earth-starring Tom Hanks- “The Last King Scotland” was actually one of Amin’s many self-indulgent titles including “his Excellency, field
marshall & President for life”) and Catch a Fire, a film which deals with South Africa, apartheid, racism and revenge. Both look incredibly interesting, and i was soo excited to see films on black culture and black people in general, outside of stereotypical contexts. Furthermore, I was proud and excited that these films were engaging issues from a Pan-African perspective, by addressing Idi Amin of Uganda and South African Apartheid. And Idlewild was dope.. Black film is looking up!
